Chapter Six

Colt felt his brothers’ eyes on him and hoped like hell he hadn’t just ruined everything. Someone had obviously hurt her and he wanted to know who, why, and how. If he ever found out what had been done to her and by whom he was going to hunt that fucker down and beat the shit out of him. A woman shouldn’t be scared of how she felt, of the emotions she held deep inside or the passion simmering beneath the surface, but that was exactly what Nikki was feeling. Fear! Pure, unadulterated fear! But it wasn’t fear of them. She wasn’t scared that he and his brothers would hurt her on a physical level. She was scared they would hurt her emotionally. Neither he nor his brothers would ever set out to hurt her at least not on purpose. She was meant to be with them and if that meant forcing the issues she had, then so be it.

Although he was happy that she had finally conceded to go out on a date with them, Colt knew the tenuous relationship they had with Nikki wouldn’t move forward until she talked with them, purged herself of all that fear and pain she had buried deep inside. He knew he was an impatient bastard but he was falling for her fast and didn’t know how much longer he could wait until he had her back in his arms.

Colt watched with awe and admiration as Nikki crossed her arms over her chest and then tilted her little chin up. She met his stare with a glare of her own and frowned at him. “I’m not scared of anything. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Oh yes you do, sweetheart, but you’re obviously not ready to talk about it yet. You will trust us one day soon, Nikki, but you will never get away from us.

“Prove it,” Colt held her stare and nearly smiled when she lowered her arms to her lap and twisted her fingers together.

“I don’t need to prove anything to you. Anyway I don’t know how you expect me to do that.”

“Come home with us after dinner,” Tony immediately replied.

Colt had been about to say the same thing but Tony had beat him to it. He met his older brother’s eyes for a moment and saw the gleam in them and when he looked at Bear he had the same gleam. Nikki was the sort of person who couldn’t resist a challenge and Colt hoped that right now would be the same. If she decided to call their bluff, he wasn’t sure what they would do next.

“Okay,” she replied and then kept her gaze down as the waitress brought their order to the table and then left again.

Colt tried to engage Nikki in conversation but she kept her answers to one word. She looked like a belligerent child as she pretended to eat her salad. Bear leaned down and spoke close to her ear but he heard what his brother said and had to hide another smile when Nikki scowled at him.
